The Christian liturgical year begins with Advent, a season of preparation for Christmas. Light the first Advent candle and reflect on hope and anticipation.

Christmas Eve

The evening before Christmas Day. Many churches hold candlelight services, and families gather to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas Day

Celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. A day of worship, family gatherings, and joy. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:11)

Epiphany (Three Kings Day)

Commemorates the visit of the Magi (Wise Men) to the infant Jesus, and the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles. Marks the end of the Christmas season in Western Christianity.

Ash Wednesday

The beginning of Lent, a 40-day season of fasting, prayer, and repentance before Easter. Many Christians receive ashes on their foreheads as a sign of mortality and penitence.

Palm Sunday

Commemorates Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, when crowds waved palm branches. Marks the beginning of Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday

Commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus washed his disciples' feet and instituted the Eucharist. "A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another." (John 13:34)

Good Friday

Commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. A solemn day of reflection on Christ's sacrifice. Many churches hold services from noon to 3 PM.
